Physical Description | Hlath is by official metrics, almost exactly typical as a Mirfaki male of his age. He does not have any permanent injuries or medical ailments he or Starfleet medical are aware of. He has the blue and yellow colouring of his mother’s ancestry. Externally he has a mostly baseline humanoid appearance, completely hairless but with larger eyes and a smoother nasal region. An amphibious but primarily aquatic species from the 16th moon of the gas giant Mirfak IX, Mirfaki are a proud but private people. They have numerous treaties with the Federation but are only a protectorate, preferring to retain their independence and more firmly control access to their world than full membership would require. Humanoid with retractable fins featured across their extremities, Mirfaki are not particularly hardy compared to their oxygen-dwelling fellow sentients, but they make up for it with sharp senses and keen minds. While they can function long-term in an oxygen environment, immersion in liquid for at least six hours a day is preferred, and at least eight hours is required every five days to prevent negative health impacts. Immersion tanks worn around the neck can stave off any deleterious effects from long-term dry-atmosphere exposure for up to a month, but discomfort will build in individual Mirfaki over time, and using tanks for more than a fortnight is generally undesirable. The chaotic nature of their home stars gives them a resistance to radiation comparable to Vulcans, however their amphibious anatomy is particularly vulnerable to complications from energy weapon injuries like phase pulse infection. Their general level of physical ability outside the water would rate a little below the average human, but they’re among the more skilled and speedy humanoid species in the water. Average lifespan is 90 years. Evolved to be primarily used underwater, their senses of smell and hearing are quite sharp, though their vision is somewhat limited and they perceive a more limited colour spectrum than most. They have no recorded natural telepathic ability but their two-lobed brains are similar enough to be compatible with other humanoid telepaths. |

Personality & Traits
General Overview | Fastidious, officious and driven by a passion for order and the rules, Hlath is a gifted scientist but ways away from being a people person. Despite being risk, mess and improvisation averse, he is dedicated to discovery and understanding, and sees great beauty in the mysteries of the universe. While he is generally affable, attentive and of good humor, he has no hesitation to correct others and seems oblivious to faux pas and awkwardness. Despite his tendency to rub others the wrong way, he is still a talented officer capable of giving and executing orders effectively. He can be haughty and pretentious, but he appreciates Federation values, and while he does not fully share the entire suite of 23rd century ethics (You can take the boy out of Mirfak IX…), he has great respect for all life and disdain for those who would violate the rights and sanctity of others. That said, he does tend to feel that scientific understanding trumps sentiment or cultural superstition, but he is precisely observant of Starfleet standards and regulations. |

Personal History | Hlath was one of a dozen young spawned in the Urulos Trench in his homeworld’s southern hemisphere, he was educated in one of the state-run facilities on his homeworld, and it was realized early that he showed great aptitude for sciences. While biological and material sciences were considered the most esteemed among his peers and people, Hlath has always had a taste for the exotic, and while formula and procedure are foremost in his mind, he is fascinated by the theoretical and the impossible, learning from a young age that it is just a matter of the right method to discover their secrets. After a successful but otherwise unremarkable childhood and adolescence, he received sponsorship to study on Vulcan at the T’Liss institute, known for its semi-aquatic campus and large cetacean cohort. While he excelled academically and began a promising career in laboratory research, he soon realized that academia was not something he wished to continue with, and that practical sciences were an itch he felt the need to scratch. While he was being wooed for a fellowship at the Zee-Magnees institute after several esteemed breakthrough publications on theoretical subspace domains, he could not resist the call to the final frontier, where the greatest mysteries were found. He applied to Starfleet, and while his application for accelerated entry was denied, he undertook a standard course of study beginning in his 25th year. He had some initial struggles adapting to his new lifestyle, but soon began to thrive in his scientific studies, even if he proved to be abysmal in flight, tactical and diplomacy. Despite his well-realized flaws, his grades remained high, and he graduated in his 29th year of life. Hlath soon realized that he had made the best possible choice, and no matter how mundane or repetitious the mission, starfleet life was exactly what he had sought. |
