Physical Description | At first glance, Dyrgen is largely indistinguishable from the average Zami, at least insofar as his physical appearance. His pointed ears and short-cropped hair sometimes get him confused for a Vulcan (though that is quickly dispelled once folks start to interact with him). Having left behind much of what characterized his aristocratic upbringing, Dyrgen has chosen the more simple, straightforward form of a typical Starfleet officer. In his off-duty hours, he tends toward that same simplicity, albeit with a little personal color thrown in. |

Personality & Traits
General Overview | Alijas Dyrgen is a man rediscovering who he is. For much of his early life (up until around the time he was coming of age), his identity was determined largely by the expectations of his family and his culture. However, upon the revelation of his father's indiscretions, his whole world turned upside down. Many who have known him (especially since that time) would describe him as kind, thoughtful, and generous, both with his presence and resources. Yet, for himself, he can be a bit of a perfectionist, often holding to a higher standard where others might offer grace (or even where he has offered it to them). As Dyrgen has worked at distinguishing between the expectations of others and his own needs, he has learned to prioritize and to make space for his own being.
Strengths & Weaknesses | Dyrgen is intelligent and well-educated (on account of his upbringing). Not only is he able to assess situations and come up with solutions quickly, but his command of multiple languages (as well as his enthusiasm for various codes and ciphers) has made him quite a capable communicator. While his rather good at affirming and lifting up the work of others (i.e. giving credit where credit is due), he struggles at times receiving it himself. This can be especially true in times of stress, when he sometimes has a tendency rely on others to set expectations and/or 'check' his decisions. With the help of a few close friends (and a good, reliable counselor), Dyrgen has made significant improvement in becoming more affirming of (and confident in) his own abilities. As he has come to discover more about who he (actually) is (i.e. as a person), he has gotten better at opening up and sharing his identity with others.
Hobbies & Interests | * hand-writing (journals, poetry, a bit of fiction, sometimes even hand writes his reports before converting them) * drawing and sketching (mostly small or individual items rather than scenes) * spending time in the outdoors (e.g. the gardens, arboretums, forests, parks, etc.) * going to the theater (plays, concerts, and lectures) * cooking (for himself or for close friends, not for strangers or larger groups) * mild sport (croquet, lacrosse, fencing) * puzzles, riddles, problem-solving * reading, history, and study of languages Languages: Zami, Jelna, Chelon, Federation Standard, Orion, Klingon, Vulcan, Romulan |
Personal History | Alijas Dyrgen was born into a fairly well-to-do aristocratic family on Rigel V. He spent much of his childhood years being groomed to carry on the family name (as well as their assets), and it was expected that he would take on the leadership role following his traditional service in the Rigelian fleet. However, not long after starting training at the Rigelian Academy, Dyrgen began to notice certain things that seemed...out of place. The frequency of odd shipments, strange transactions, and mysterious persons drove him to do his own digging, upon which he discovered that his father had lost everything due to fiscal mismanagement and risky investing. Not only did this destroy his relationship with his father, but it also resulted in his being dismissed from the Rigelian Academy partway into his second year. With no lands or assets to speak of (and a tarnished family reputation), Dyrgen turned to a Starfleet career for opportunity to start fresh and to build a life for himself beyond the scope of his father's failings. He hoped it would allow him to pursue his dreams and, with any luck, possibly even redeem his family name. And it seemed he was off to a good start. Through his time at Starfleet Academy (and into his years serving aboard the Gimbutas), Dyrgen proved himself a dedicated officer and loyal colleague. His efforts were rewarded with recognition from his superiors and respect from his shipmates, earning him not only increase in rank, but also responsibility. Within five years of graduation, he was leading his own department. |
