IN THE 23RD CENTURY.....

Klingon raiders, Orion pirates and Gorn hunters have been problems along the Neutral Zone and the Federation's Rim for decades, but a fragile political balance has held fast since the 2260's. The Federation maintains peace and authority on its side of the Neutral Zone with a chain of deep space stations.

Deep Space Station Lambda-2 is one such outpost. It lies precariously close to Klingon space between Donatu and Arcanis Sectors. The Starship Proxima is part of Starfleet's first line of defense there. Recently refitted, the Proxima boasts the most advanced layout of the venerable Constitution-class starships to date.

Genesis

Project Genesis and its fallout has dramatically altered- by some reckoning, destroyed- any semblance of the status quo. The Klingons are sure its a weapon. Various criminal syndicates want to steal the technology. Some Federation worlds are uncomfortable with the idea.

Klingon raiders- often from Houses D'Ghor, Kor and Duras- have begun brazenly violating the Neutral Zone to harass shipping and test Federation mettle. There is even concern that Romulan agents could be attempting to pit the Klingons and Federation against one another. The Hegemony remains enigmatic to their neighbors and care little about this "world-making," but sense an opportunity to restock the larders of their hunting ships and hatchery worlds.

Main Engineering on a starship was always a buzz of activity whether in spacedock or not. The constant thruming sounds from the warp core, the slight radiant heat from the injector manifolds, and not to mention the constant sound of buttons being pressed, spanners being turned, and orders being given, made for a scene of organized chaos. And it was in the midst of this organized chaos that the Proxima's Chief Engineer stood at the primary status board. Jethro Romanowski, or Jet as he is referred to, stood in his engineering jumpsuit staring at the main status board with his…

"Are you serious?"

The exhalation of deep frustration emanated from the pilot's seat where Ensign Fredricks sat, hands on his thighs, staring at the navigational panel. In front of him were the usual readouts, helm controls, communications array, engine reports. But a few of them were lit up red and were blinking as if the demanding red color was simply insufficient to capture any true flyboy's attention.

"This was supposed to be a milk run," he muttered darkly before punching at a control he'd already tried to engage four times without success. Annoyed he…

The watch should have belonged to Delta shift, but Captain Mac Sullivan had made the call to have his senior staff at their stations as they approached Space Lab Regula One. The bridge hummed with the controlled tension that came before the unknown—every console manned by experienced hands, every officer alert despite the early hour.

Ensign Kaaven Saenar sat at the Communications console. The soft glow of the displays lit the contours of his face, accentuating the pronounced Haliian cranial ridges that nearly touched at the center of his furrowed brow. The ridges deepened…

The comms station aboard the Proxima wasn’t especially glamorous. Consoles hummed softly under pale blue lighting, their status monitors flickering in rhythm as subspace traffic cycled by in endless streams.

Ensign Kaaven Saenar already felt at home there. He hummed as he worked. It was something gentle and wordless, almost like a lullaby. His fingers skimmed delicately over a screen while a long diagnostic scrolled beside him.

Lieutenant Lioren Daeval lingered at the threshold to the bridge, momentarily unnoticed.his arms folded coolly across his chest.

He watched the young Haliian in stillness: the subtle sway of…

Captain Marcus Sullivan stood behind the center command chair, his dark brown eyes scanning the information as it scrolled across the viewscreen, which was usually a field of stars but now displayed the latest reports from the Federation News Network. The headlines made for grim reading: "GENESIS PLANET DESTROYED IN PROTOMATTER CASCADE" and "SUBSPACE SHOCKWAVES DETECTED THROUGHOUT MUTARA SECTOR."

Thirty minutes ago, the Science Officer had detected enormous energy readings in the vicinity of the Genesis Planet, and now it seemed that what had started as Dr. Marcus's attempt to create…

Commander's Log... Stardate 8233.4.
Shuttlecraft Toliman is en route to Deep Space Station Lambda-2 near the Klingon planet Krios Prime. I have left Federation space and am traveling along non-aligned shipping lanes- the Ardana-Valt Trade Corridor. Ardanan authorities sent Starfleet a code yellow notice of Klingon raiding activities in the area over the last month. I am monitoring an Orion hauling craft on a parallel course bearing 251 mark 011.

I have been reassigned from the U.S.S. Ibn Battuta to the U.S.S. Proxima as First Officer and Chief Navigator. My databanks confirms The Proxima is one of the remaining Constitution-class…
