It has been months since the premature deployment of the Genesis Project, the top-secret classification of the program and the events surrounding it, and the ultimate loss of the planet. Starfleet is still navigating the choppy waters of the political and scientific repercussions. The fugitive command team of the former U.S.S. Enterprise is in self-imposed exile on Vulcan under the protection of Ambassador Sarek. The Klingon Ambassador to the Federation has vetoed any possibility of a long-term peace treaty with the Empire until Kirk is brought to face their justice.

As the unstable Genesis Planet tears itself apart in a cascade of protomatter destruction, subspace shockwaves ripple through the Mutara sector. In the aftermath of this cosmic catastrophe, an automated distress signal suddenly activates aboard the abandoned Space Lab Regula One.
"UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS... GENESIS ARCHIVE... INTRUDER ALERT."
The transmission is brief but chilling. Attempts to contact the skeleton security detail stationed at the shuttered facility fail completely. With tensions at breaking point along the Klingon border and Genesis technology potentially at stake, Starfleet Command issues a rare Code One alert—normally reserved for imminent disaster, invasion, or the outbreak of warfare.
The USS Proxima, currently on patrol near the neutral zone, immediately acknowledges the emergency and sets course for Regula One at maximum warp. What Captain Sullivan and his crew will discover aboard the research station will test everything they believe about duty, justice, and the price of peace. -
